Two adventurous 'jet-ski' enthusiasts, Dale Quinn and Rod Wilson, have tackled the notorious Bass Strait and won.
In the early afternoon of yesterday (Thursday April 10) they rode their skis into Musselroe Bay, Tasmania, marking the end of their 600km double crossing of the strait. It is believed that they are the first to complete the double crossing on skis.
The pair left Tassie four-days ago aboard their modified skis in the quest to ride from Tasmania to the mainland and back -- and all to raise money for the Kiss Goodbye to MS charity.
As of yesterday, the daring ski riders had raised nearly $6000 for the charity.
For Launceston man Dale Quinn, the motivation to cross Bass Strait on a ski was borne from a simple premise: "It’s there, so why not?"
"With the appropriate planning and preparation it can be done, it can be done safely and it can be done for a good cause," Quinn added.
The 600km round trip saw the ski riders leave from Musselroe Bay in the state’s North East, island-hopping across Bass Strait past Cape Barren Island, Flinders Island and Deal Island they reach Port Albert in Victoria. Although at least four others have completed the crossing on a ski before Mr Quinn, this was the first time a return trip has been attempted.
Mr Quinn's 2008 Yamaha FX HO has been modified to carry an additional 60 litres of fuel, a 60 litre esky for food and water, tools and camping equipment to ensure they made the distance. In addition, it had been kitted out with Lowrance navigational equipment and a state-of-the-art VHF radio.
