Jeanneau 2016 Sun Odyssey range

New bowsprit, improved performance, better cockpit and soft-furnishing choices

Mention Sun Odyssey and just about everyone who has raised a sail or chartered a yacht thinks Jeanneau. Certainly the SOs have been one of the most successful cruising yacht ranges in Australia.

Take the recently released Sun Odyssey 349, which we tested in full last December. In a very short time, this pocket cruiser/racer, with the two or three-cabin layout and a sail-away $200-220k package price, has become an Australian best-seller.

More than 20 Jeanneau 349 Sun Odysseys are on the water here with more being delivered every month, says the Jeanneau importing network.

Not one to rest on its laurels, however, the big French yacht builder recently announced the renewal of all models in the Sun Odyssey range from the 34 to the 51 footer.

In order to integrate the latest design trends and innovations, several significant changes have been made to this very successful yacht range.

MODERN BOWSPRIT
Everyone wants more performance and a sprit with an asymmetrical spinnaker is the way to go. The entire Sun Odyssey line, already known for performance and comfort, will now benefit from the addition of a modern bowsprit.

This bowsprit, integrated into the hull lines, offers an elegant, more distinguished design that draws its inspiration directly from the world of racing yachts.

With more clearance between the anchor and the bow, it will facilitate anchoring with greater protection and an anchor roller on the centreline.

This bowsprit, designed for a light-airs Code 0 sails, can also carry larger asymmetrical spinnakers for more enjoyable and sprightly sailing.

BETTER WATER ACCESS
Yacht makers are realising that water access and improving your waterfront real estate carries enormous appeal in a lifestyle market like ours.

The aft platforms have been enlarged on the mid-size Sun Odyssey models: the Sun Odyssey 389 (optional), the Sun Odyssey 419 and the Sun Odyssey 449.

Jeanneau says these new swim platforms are three times larger than the previous models and provide an ideal access to the sea or a place just to hang out and wiggle the toes.

AND DOWN BELOW
No-one likes a steep companionway. The Sun Odyssey 389, 419 and 449 now have had their companionways modified. To improve ease of access, the internal access now features a gentler angle, hinged doors, and a lowered doorsill.

SMARTER UPHOLSTERY AND LIGHTING
Although much of the Sun Odyssey yachts' appeal in production-boat terms is its nod to tradition, the entire 2016 range now benefits from a new upholstery selection combined with comfortable pillow backrests with additional choices of piping.

This new selection can be complemented by a choice of floorboards in three different wood finishes to create a more personalised ambience.

All three new models are now enhance by indirect LED lighting in the saloon, which is said to give a warmer and brighter atmosphere all at once.

Jeanneau says the successful renewal of the Sun Odyssey line enables the yacht maker to offer a complete and more consistent product range, including the following models: Sun Odyssey 349, new Sun Odyssey 389, new Sun Odyssey 419, new Sun Odyssey 449, new Sun Odyssey 479, and new Sun Odyssey 519, which is available with a trick auto Assisted Sail Trim feature.
