The high-rolling Packers' penchant for immeasurably more pleasurable boats is well documented. Not that you can hide the calibre of craft they prefer, mind you. But with a new 52-metre custom Dutch-built superyacht unloaded in Darwin this week, James is certainly continuing his late father Kerry’s tradition.
Indeed, James likes his boats. He borrowed a Mangusta 107 in 2009 while awaiting delivery of a 165 that he offloaded in 2010. Then he bought a Leopard 46 -- pictured near The Spit on Sydney Harbour -- named Z that was put to market in July last year.
Costing more than $20 million, and with a 35-knot top speed, Z had presence. But for sheer bulk, the family’s 88-metre refitted ocean-going research vessel Artic P wins out. Trouble is, you have to fly to the French Riviera to see what all the fuss is about. Artic P was late Kerry’s preferred craft.
Closer to home, Jame’s new superyacht is no minnow. Named Sea Horse, the steel-and-alloy 170ft Dutch-built superyacht is reportedly Sydney-bound in time for New Year’s Eve celebrations.
We understand the 1999-model Amels has undergone a complete refit.
According to the specifications on the web, she’s powered a pair of 1200hp Cummins KTA 38M2 diesel engines, carries 106,000 litres of fuel and 17,000 litres of water for an autonomous cruising range of 5470nm at 14 knots.

With two children and another on the way, James and wife Erica seemed to have shifted down a gear into the go-slow boating lane, With stabilisers, Sea Horse could just be the perfect family boat. But for how long?
