It's among the most unusual visiting vessels we've seen on the Gold Coast

Hatikvah hits the Gold Coast with a mission in store

When it comes to weird and whacky watercraft, say like the Turkey Boat, the Gold Coast never fails to disappoint.

Take this recent arrival named Hatikvah spotted by our local writer Jeff Webster. Clearly, the Troy-like steel barge is on a mission. But to where?

A search revealed a YouTube video. The owner, Abraham Tanton, and his wife built the 'ship' to travel to Jerusalem via the Red Sea. It will be finished in a month, he says.

"The front is designed to handle a lot of impact. There's low draft and strong construction for performing humanitarian work in challenging waterways," and delivering his message to Jerusalem, says the 'missionary'.

"There's a lateen sail to add to the middle and a square-rigged sail to the back. There are large fins [or fixed dagger boards] and outriggers to come. The boat has been designed to handle extreme rollovers," he says.

It sure is unusual and we're it down to another thread in the rich tapestry of odd craft and different characters that make up our boating community.
