The QLD Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing has released an official warning to boaters and swimmers about the possible presence of the deadly Irukandji jellyfish in the vicinity of Fraser Island.
The alert states that... “a number of people have been stung by what is suspected to be Irukandji jellyfish along the western coast of Fraser Island in the past few days. Reported locations include Platypus Bay, Wathumba, Awinya and Woralie Creeks.
“Visitors are advised that swimming or wading in the water at these locations and along the western coast of Fraser Island is not recommended. If urgent medical assistance is required, phone triple zero (000) or (112) on mobile phone.”
The jellyfish have been responsible for plenty of concern on the Fraser Coast in recent weeks, after the AGL Action Rescue Helicopter airlifted six people off Fraser Island with suspected Irukandji stings.
One teenager who was stung was reportedly a passenger on an 8m yacht, anchored on the western side of Fraser Island, 50m off the beach at Wathumba Creek. He was stung just below his right knee, as he was wading through knee deep water, it was reported.
A seventh person was stung, but chose to remain on the island.
