Many boaters shy away from installing radar on their vessels because they have heard horror stories about the dangers of the radiation emitted by some old conventional radar units.
Navico, which has just won the 2009 EDN innovation award for the best application of RF design for its new SIMRAD BR24 Broadband Radar, overcomes those fears.
The BR24 transmits a fraction of the power of traditional radar, less than one tenth the energy of a mobile phone. No harmful radiation escapes from the compact 48cm radome. This allows flexible installation on a range of vessels.
With a range resolution of less than 3 metres, the BR24 eliminates close-in vessel blind spot and gives clear and highly-detailed views of surroundings to a 1/32 nautical mile range scale.
The superior target definition and target separation allows the confident navigation of unfamiliar areas and busy commercial shipping zones at night and in poor weather.
The compact radome weighs just 7.4kg and draws only 17 watts in operation. It is compatible with Lowrance HDS, Northstar and Simrad multifunction displays. The BR24 has an effective range of 24 nautical miles and supports chart overlay and display networking.
It has a temperature operating range from minus 25 degress C to 55 degrees C.
