The Adelaide Game Fishing Club (AGFC) has reported one of the most amazing recaptures of a tagged fish in the 41-year history of the NSW Game Fishing Tagging Program.
The recapture of a far-ranging kingfish released from Port Augusta SA, and recaptured off Coffs Harbour in the NSW North Coast will surely redefine our understanding of the movements of this great sporting fish.
On the 21/10/13, club weight recorder Paul Williams (photo 1) tagged a kingfish pictured aboard Adam Todd's boat 'Like a Boss' estimated at 14kg and measuring 114cm. Kingfish of this calibre aren't unusual in SA, especially in winter, when some record 'hoodlums' to 40kg are landed.
Some 370 days later, Gerard Billing recaptured the fish (photo 2) at South Solitary Island off Coffs Harbour in northern NSW! That's an incredible journey measuring around 1450 nautical miles (coastline measurement).
The recaptured fish was apparently feeding with a school of around seven other kings up to 25kg when it took a liking to Gerard's stick bait. He re-released the fish after a quick photo, estimating its length at around 125cm.
As the AGFC reports, everyone who has heard of this is in shock and it has certainly added another dimension — and possible changes to future management plans — to what we know about the movements of the kingfish.
