'Ichi Ban' Line Honours

Matt Allen's 'Ichi Ban' has taken line honours from renowned maxi Skandia in the annual Audi Sydney Southport Yacht Race late last month

Ichi Ban - a Jones 70 - crossed the finish line under spinnaker off Main Beach at 5.13pm on Sunday, March 25, after starting in Sydney Harbour at 1pm the day before.

Skandia finished second after closing the gap to less than half a mile on Sunday afternoon. Skandia was hot on the heels of Ichi Ban before the winning boat pulled away to claim line honours unchallenged.

"We were racing Skandia the whole way and could see them most of the time…it was a really exciting boat-on-boat race," said a delighted Allen.

While not unscathed, Ichi Ban suffered less misfortune than the larger Skandia - another Jones design - which crossed the line at 17.53pm. Skandia sustained massive tears to its jib at the start and twice to its mainsail, now a write-off, according to skipper Grant Wharington, who nursed the boat to the finish.
