Hurricane Sandy claims replica Bounty: Rescue Video
14 crew saved, one body retrieved, captain missingThe captain is lost and a body of a female crew member has been retrieved after the 1960-built replica of HMS Bounty sank 78 nautical miles off Hatteras, North Carolina, while trying to skirt around Hurricane Sandy.
Battling 5.5 metre seas and furious winds, the 16 crew reportedly abandoned ship in two 14-man liferafts.
But two people were washed away in the process. The body of a 42-year-old female crew person has since been recovered, but Captain Robin Walbridge is missing.
U.S. Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters performed the rescue -- you can see the dramatic Coast Guard footage below -- while Hercules C-130 aircraft began subsequent searches for the missing captain.
The replica Bounty sunk soon after the call to abandon ship, but at last report its mast was still visible.
As with many tall ships, the Bounty operated as a sea school and was a recent exhibit at the Tall Ships Festival in Halifax in July. The replica starred in 1962 movie Mutiny on the Bounty and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
Such is the ferocity of Hurricane Sandy that the massive seas and winds battering the East Coast are feared to claim other lives. Thus far they were otherwise on land.
The bill from damaged boats, marinas and other waterfront structures will likely run into the millions.
