Honda Marine has added an all-new 140hp outboard engine to its North American line-up, flagging it as a US market-only replacement for the BF135 it teased just a week ago.
The 2022 Honda BF140 uses the same 2.4-litre twin-cam four-stroke cylinder block as the BF115 and BF150 high-performance outboard engines that are among Honda’s best-selling models.
However, the new engine won't be considered for the Australian market, as Honda Marine Australia sources its engines from Europe where emissions standards match Australian standards. Instead, we will continue to source the recently revealed BF135 that is due to arrive next year featuring new looks and fly-by-wire throttle and steering.
“With the launch of the BF140, Honda Marine will set a competitive benchmark by providing users in this power category — the heart of the boating market — an outboard with more horsepower, broader, flatter torque curve and smoother power delivery throughout the engine’s operating range, along with additional, innovative technological features and controls,” Honda said.
The new outboard engine taps into the same VTEC variable valve lift technology as the BF150 that helps it produce a broader, flatter torque curve, resulting in smooth power throughout the engine’s operating range.
It also adopts the BF150’s dual-stage induction technology that maximises air intake for combustion, improving engine performance.
Just like the other engines, the BF140 will be available in the US with a choice of either mechanical or “iST” electrically boosted steering and throttle controls.
The new Honda BF140 outboard engine was shown for the first time at this week’s IBEX 2021 marine trade show in the US ahead of a North American launch early next year. Honda Australia was asked for comment.
“The introduction of the redesigned BF115 and BF150 and the all-new BF140 underscores the Honda Marine commitment to serve the most popular segments of the marine market,” Honda Power Equipment US vice-president William Walton said.
"But these new products also signal that Honda Marine is enhancing our existing lineup with an eye toward [the] development of new products to meet the growing demand for larger outboard motors for the future.
“Equally important, we are investing into further efforts to address the world’s pressing environmental issues by utilising unique new Honda technology.”
Honda also used IBEX 2021 to reveal a new user interface for its high-powered engine range, initially aimed at its US market customers.
The new HondaLink Marine smartphone app allows users to keep in constant contact with their boat, via the outboard engine but also through a range of optional sensors that can be fitted around the boat.
According to Honda, the smartphone app will allow users to remotely monitor engine health including revs, temperature, fuel rate, oil temperature, fuel pressure, and more, monitor the boat’s location status, speed, and the opening of hatches or doors, and help with weather reports, enhanced trip planning, and simplified social media uploading and sharing.
A Honda marine Australia spokesman told boatsales.com.au that the HondaLink Marine system could one day be considered for the Australian market.
"HondaLink Marine as of right now is an American-only system developed by American Honda," the spokesman said.
"There is a possibility of having this system brought to Australia in the future. It is currently being studied, but at this stage, there are no firm plans."
