Honda has released three new jet-drive outboard engines, the 40hp, 65hp and 105hp, primarily for the North American market where jets are popular for accessing shallow river environments where conventional prop-driven outboards just can not go.
Based on the popular and proven three-cylinder 998cc BF60 platform, the 40 Jet features a lower end jet drive, proprietary BLAST technology which advances the ignition timing for improved hole shot, Lean Burn Control for improved fuel efficiency when up and running, variable speed trolling, 17A of battery charging power, and a 122kg dry weight. It also has NMEA2000 connectivity.
The new 65 Jet adopts the BF90 block and tech, adding Honda’s Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) system for improved power, torque, and fuel efficiency across the rev range. This four-stroke SOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine has 1496cc of displacement and makes 65hp at 5800pm. It weighs 169kg.
Although due for release later in 2017, the new flagship 105 Jet is big unit. Based on the BF150, the four-stroke DOHC four-cylinder 16-valve engine displaces an impressive 2354cc for 105hp at 5500pm using programmed fuel injection. The weight isn’t yet announced, but it would surely hurtle you along that shallow alpine river at a top speed.
While jet outboards aren’t a big thing in Australia, they certainly call New Zealand’s big and shallow freshwater rivers home. We’re running this news to keep our outboard enthusiasts up to speed and just in case there’s a jet junky out there.
