Kayak fishers from around the world will be waking up to a Continental breakfast at the Bemm River Hotel this morning before being advised of the arrangements for today’s Pre-Fish on the river for the 3rd Hobie Fishing World Championships 2013.
The idea of the Pre-Fish is to pair members of our local teams with international competitors to show what gear, style of fishing, lure and line selection will work best for the local waterways. Some 32 anglers and kayaks will be striking out on the Bemm River representing 16 different countries.
After the first day’s competition tomorrow, the whole kit and caboodle packs up and heads to nearby Marlo. Friday is a Navigation Day where anglers can scope but not fish the waterway. Then comes the final weekend of competition fishing.
The fishing rules are simple: a live weigh-in with three of the heaviest legal bream in healthy condition each afternoon. The competition operates under the framework of the Australian ABT umbrella of rules. These are cast and retrieve, lure and fly only events.
All anglers will fish from identically rigged Hobie MirageDrive Pro Angler 14 kayaks. No modifications are allowed to be made to the factory-supplied kayaks.
The Bemm River and Marlo are renowned for their black bream fishing, picturesque setting, clean waterways and fetching townships.
When asked about the development of the idea of the world fishing championships, organiser Steve Fields said: "Hobie Cat has been hosting Hobie sailing world championships since the first Hobie 16 titles held in Hawaii in 1976. They are fantastically competitive and ruthless events on the water but they are great social occasions as well".
"People from all over the world with similar interests not only compete but share expertise, knowledge and skills. In the end, there is one World Champion, but everyone goes home feeling better about themselves, with new friends, new skills and having had a cultural experience in a part of the world they, otherwise, may never have visited."
"Hobie Cat has grown and diversified into new areas since those early days. Our venture into kayaks has built a huge, worldwide Hobie kayak fishing fraternity. I wanted to bring these people together somehow and came up with the Hobie Fishing World Championship," adds Fields.
Hobie Cat takes care of the difficulty and expense of freighting the ‘yaks to international venues and is experienced in event organisation after 35 years of sailing world championships. So there’s every chance the world championship in kayak fishing will catch on. More at www.hobiefishingworlds.com.
