History was made in the 2013 Fastnet Race when a French father-and-son team sailed the race of their lives to take the overall win in IRC. Never in the 88-year history of the race has an entry from the two-handed division won the race.
Sailing their diminutive 33ft JPK 1010 Night and Day, the duo of Alexis and Pascal Loison beat over 330 boats to take the Fastnet Challenge Cup. Initially, the smart money was on the big maxis and multi-million dollar purpose-built ocean racers like the 75ft Ran, the 100ft ICAP Leopard or even the Volvo 70s taking out the race, but in the end, this year favoured the smaller boats.
Second place was taken by another JPK 1010, the fully-crewed Foggy Dew. In fact, there were four JPK 1010s in the top ten. Third was the J110
"That's one of the reasons the Rolex Fastnet Race is so successful," said Warden Owen. "For people, family and friends, sailing in the middle of the pack and at the bottom, it is not just a challenge -- they have a realistic chance of winning."
