Hinckley releases the “world’s first fully electric yacht”

The Dasher has twin 80hp electric motors, BMW batteries and slippery and silent operation

Known for its pretty picnic boats and long yachting heritage dating back to 1928, the Hinckley Company in Maine has just opened the door to its boating future with the release of the “world’s first fully electric luxury yacht.”

Called the Dasher, the stylish 28ft 6in centre console uses twin 80hp Whisper Drive electric motors for a cruise speed of 10mph or about 8.5-9.0 knots fast displacement speed and a range of 40nm.

The is a dual 50-amp docking charger system for the dual waterproof BMW i3 lithium ion batteries, which is said to charge twice as fast as the most popular plug-in electric cars. Dasher gains a full charge in under four hours, Hinckley says.

Described as the shape of the future, the carbon-epoxy composite hull and carbon stringers are part of the light and sleek approach to optimising performance. Weight has been saved via 3D-printed titanium deck hardware and lightweight Artisanal teak.

Hinckley says with zero emissions and zero time lost traveling to the pump, "it’s not what we’ve added to Dasher but what we’ve removed that you’ll love most."

The silent electric boat looks ready to serve as a high-tech luxury commuter, tourer and tender (to superyachts).

Designed from the ground up for fully electric propulsion, the Dasher is a Euro-style open-transom centre console with surrounding seating.

The Michael Peters' hull shape has been designed for electric propulsion, hence the long waterline to maximise speed, while a fine entry with flare enhances seakeeping and handling.

As on all Hinckley Yachts, Dasher has a shallow draft that allows you to explore skinny waterways. Touchscreen navigation adds to the driving experience, as does Joystick docking and a retractable windscreen.

Orders are being taken now for the U.S. summer of 2018. It’s been reported the Dasher will set you back about US$500k.
