More than 70 yachts, ranging from foiling moths to trailer sailers, are expected to take part in the sixth annual Heaven Can Wait charity regatta on Lake Macquarie over the October long weekend.
Competitors at the NSW Central Coast venue are all raising money for the NSW Cancer Council and Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie and more than $40,000 is expected to be raised.
Entries are open right up until the start of the race and Heaven Can Wait Yacht Club commodore Shaun Lewicki says entry fees have been kept at just $50 for the 24-hour race and $30 for the Sunday's One Lap Dash -- that will see skiffs, catamarans and moths vying for the fastest time around the 24-nautical mile course.
Boats competing in the 24-hour event sail around the course as many times as they can from Saturday morning.
The regatta was conceived and organised by Lewicki, a Lake Macquarie sailor and cancer survivor, to raise funds for cancer research, awareness and support programs.
The event kicks off with a gala dinner at the Royal Motor Yacht Club headquarters at Toronto.
The official guest at the dinner will be current Moth Wold champion Nathan Outteridge who holds the one-lap-dash race record of two hours, seven minutes and 31 seconds.
Outteridge and his sailing partner Iain Jensen, both Lake Macquarie sailors, were the 2009 World Champions in the 49er skiff class and will represent Australia in next year's London Olympics. They recently won the Olympic test event.
