Hazard to navigation in Yankalilla Bay, SA

A restricted area has been established under the Harbor & Navigation Act 1993 around the Oceanlinx Ltd wave energy converter currently stranded in Yankalilla Bay, approximately one kilometre off Carrickalinga Beach in the Encounter Marine Park.

The restricted area is an approximate 200 x 200-metre box, marked by yellow special markers on its corner points.

Unauthorised vessels and people are prohibited from entering the restricted area at all times. Failure to comply is an offence that carries a maximum penalty of $1250.

This newly established restricted area replaces the short-term prohibition notice that was issued under the Marine Parks Act 2007.

The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) wants to remind the community to stay well away from the structure as there is a significant safety risk in this location for the community, particularly as this is a popular holiday spot.

The structure is designed to convert wave energy and in certain conditions could create water turbulence around the structure resulting in a possible danger for snorkellers, divers and swimmers.

Kayaking or canoeing in the area is also very dangerous. Entering the restricted area also poses a navigation risk to vessels due to parts of the structure being submerged and not easily visible from the water’s surface.

The wave energy convertor was stranded in Yankalilla Bay after difficulties arose while it was being towed from Port Adelaide to Port MacDonnell, where it was to be situated as a wave energy convertor.

The State Government is continuing to work with the owners, insurers and the District Council of Yankalilla to ensure the structure is clearly marked as a navigational hazard for boat operators and to determine the most appropriate course of action.
