Some 600 paddlers in up to 400 canoes and kayaks will take to the water at Windsor at 4.00pm on October 28 and travel overnight to Brooklyn, arriving between 3.00am and noon, for the annual Hawkesbury Canoe Classic.
The fun paddle -- and fundraiser for the Arrow Bone Marrow Transplant -- includes 21 checkpoints along the river bank for paddlers to stop and rest, perhaps enjoy a much-needed back rub given by volunteers from the Sports Physiotherapy Group, and enjoy hot or cold drinks, a warm fire, biscuits and soup.
The race is broken in to many different divisions to cater to all ages and levels of experience as well as different styles of craft -- there's even division for stand-up paddlers!
Along the way, the paddlers will have to deal with fatigue, pain and blisters, but the ever-present tidal flows of the river are the greatest challenge.
It is mandatory that each competitor also has a land-crew to look after them at four main foreshore locations and provide a fresh change of clothes and a hot meal.
To enter the Hawkesbury Classic you need: the ability to swim, an unsinkable canoe, kayak or surf ski, a personal flotation device (PFD), a land-crew with a vehicle and lots of enthusiasm, plus a lot of determination.
The river will be closed to boating from Windsor to Sackville from 3.00pm to 10.00pm on Saturday, October 28. De Rubbens boat ramp at Mooney Mooney will be closed from Saturday until noon on Sunday.
