Have your say on mooring in NSW

Government asks for input as demand for moorings and storage increases

With almost two million people using NSW waterways each year and boat ownership on the way up, Transport for NSW has called on the general public to help address the challenges faced by the increasing demand for on-water boat storage.

The Maritime Management Centre (MMC) within Transport for NSW has produced a report covering a range of issues and possible reform options for boat moorings in NSW, says MMC General Manager Howard Glenn.

"We’re now encouraging the public to read our report and help us provide solutions to what is a very challenging issue, not only for the maritime industry but for the community in general," Mr Glenn said.

The MMC is seeking feedback on:
>> The number of moored boats allowed in a particular area
>> How boat owners should be maintaining a mooring
>> Modernising the regulatory and policy framework
>> Improving priority waiting lists

Mr Glenn said Sydney Harbour is home to the largest number of moorings of all waterways in the state.

"Many NSW boat owners looking for a mooring are placed on a waiting list due to high demand in popular areas. Of those who are on a waiting list, around one in five people have been waiting for more than five years," Mr Glenn said.

"We need to look at ways of using existing sites better as well increasing capacity in other areas. Improving the way we manage moorings is a big part of the overall solution.

"We can also increase dry stack storage options, increase commercial marina berths and provide more boat trailer parking," Mr Glenn said.

The report is available to download from: http://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/engagement/moorings-review-issues-paper

People can have their say by emailing mmc@transport.nsw.gov.au from Now until June 20.
