Have A Say On PFDs

A national discussion paper is asking members of the boating public to comment on the compulsory wearing of personal flotation devices (PFDs) in order to develop a consistent national approach on this issue

The National Principles to Guide in Assessing Risks to Determine Policy on the Compulsory Wearing of PFDs discussion paper was released in September by the National Marine Safety Committee (NMSC).

“This is a chance for boaties to not only have their say on whether PFDs should be compulsory in certain situations, but what these situations are,” said NMSC chief executive officer Maurene Horder.

Data on recreational boating fatalities from four states from 2001 to 2005 showed that 87.9 per cent of those who died in a boating incident were not wearing a PFD.

The discussion paper, which closes for comment at the end of November, is at www.nmsc.gov.au.
