Hanse introduces electric E-Motion Rudder Drive

Forget the diesel donk, the Hanse 315 has a new rechargeable lithium-ion electric motor on its rudder

German yacht maker Hanse has partnered with steering giants Jefa and electric-motor manufacturer Torqeedo to create the revolutionary E-Motion Rudder Drive.

Fitted to a Hanse 315 yacht, the E-Motion Rudder Drive uses an electric engine instead of a diesel donk for the manoeuvrabilty of a saildrive and a host of other advantages.

A 4 kW Torqeedo electric engine and a folding propeller have been integrated into the rudder shaft to offer emission-free and almost silent propulsion.

The integrated engine in the rudder operates by directing its thrust from the rudder blade at its predetermined steering angle. The result is significantly improved manoeuvrability, according to Hanse.

EASIER DOCKING AND LOW MAINTENANCE
The extended rudder angle of 100 degrees in total is said to allow the Hanse 315 with E-Motion Rudder Drive to turn from standstill on her own axis and in forward or reverse.

When docking and taking off parallel to the pier, the stern of the yacht can be pulled precisely to the dock, which is particularly advantageous in strong winds and narrow ports, Hanse adds.

Other advantages of the new Hanse 315 E-Motion Rudder Drive include a 100kg reduction in weight, no opening in the hull for the saildrive, leading to less drag when sailing, and no noise and no diesel smell.

Hanse adds that the system is low maintenance, simple, and has few moving parts.

THE E-MOTION RUDDER DRIVE SYSTEM
The E-Motion Rudder Drive System, which consists of two to four lithium ion batteries, can propel the 315 yacht in a smooth sea at 4.5 knots up to 30 nautical miles, Hanse says. At lower speeds, the range is extended significantly.

The maximum speed on the 315 is said to be 6.1 knots; not much less than a conventional diesel engine.

With the integrated quick-chargers, the new Hanse 315 E-Motion Rudder Drive is fully recharged in just three hours and ready for the next emission-free adventure.

The new Hanse 315 E-Motion Rudder Drive will celebrate its world premiere at the International Boat Show Hamburg on October 30, 2016.

KEY FEATURES: HANSE 315 E-MOTION RUDDER DRIVE
>> Great manoeuvrability due to active, direct steering
>> Clean and quiet drive with 4kW engine power, 6.1 knots top speed, and almost 30nm range at 4.5 knots
>> No fuel required, recharging the batteries at the berth will take about three hours
>> Virtually no maintenance and you can forget about changing oil or checking the oil level, impellers and filters
>> Less outboard outlets because there is no saildrive or exhaust
>> Significantly less weight for more performance and sailing fun
>> Additional control via app showing battery status, position, range, speed and tracking lower speeds so you can extend your range

The E-Motion Rudder Drive fits within Hanse's design motto of 'breaking Rules, setting trends' and includes the recently released Hanse Crossover Sail. More at www.windcrafthanse.com.
