Hamilton Island Race Week hots up
In a show of sailing strength, 100 entries have already signed up for HammoOrganisers of Hamilton Island Race Week from August 19 to 26 are celebrating after the early entry list tops 100 including the world’s most successful ocean-racing yachts ever.
Over the past nine decades, the famous 16-metre long American yawl, Dorade, has won more of the world’s major races, and covered more offshore racing miles, than any other yacht.
Dorade has collected first place trophies for the Fastnet Race out of England, the Bermuda race, the Transpacific Race between Los Angeles and Hawaii, plus many more.
But this classic yacht is just one rig racing at the famous sailing soiree. While early indications suggest the fleet might not match last year’s record of 252 yachts, the quality of yachts leaves isn't left wanting.
The 100th entry for this year’s regatta was lodged by Sydney yachtsman, Mark Michalowsky, who is returning to Race Week after a 10-year absence on the same Beneteau 47.7, Carla M.
"The desire to return to Race Week has always been there, but until this year business obligations have caused it to be just that – a desire," Michalowsky says.
"I bought the yacht in Spain in 2000, had it sailed to Australia, then competed at Race Week in 2004, and again a decade ago, but that’s where it ended.
"Fortunately I’ve finally got my business activities sorted out so I can now get back to spending more time sailing."
Like most sailors at Hammo, Michalowsky looks forward to the postcard around-the-islands racing in the tropics, the camaraderie, and the onshore social calendar that is said to be as inclusive as it is exclusive.
Audi Hamilton Island Race Week is schedule for August 19 to 26.
