Two men have been filmed riding jet skis inside a flooded underground car park on the Gold Coast as severe storms continue to smash the state.
The social media video, filmed at least a couple of days ago and shown in longer form on the ABC News website, shows a pair of riders on stand-up jet skis swerving in and around semi-submerged cars and structural pylons – there appears to be about half a metre of water – as overhead fluorescent lights cut through the car park’s gloom.
No other information about the video is available.
The video comes after authorities closed access to all boating on the Brisbane River in the wake of concerns that debris washing down with floodwaters from record rainfalls in the region would become too high a collision risk.
Queensland has numerous emergency alerts in place along its southern coastline as floodwaters continue to rise in the wake of storms that have been described as a one-in-1000-year event.
The clean-up job will be massive as boating infrastructure from navigation marks to jetties that were swept away in floodwater need replacing before recreational boaters can be confident of returning to the water.
Warnings of thunderstorms and the potential for flash flooding were issued today for the coast between Bundaberg and the Sunshine Coast, with the potential for even more run-off as stormwater runs across already saturated ground.
