“Kangaroos Crossing” signs have been installed in the North Arm of the Coomera River, the busy waterway that leads from the Gold Coast Broadwater upstream to Hope Island and beyond, in an effort to make boaties aware that the animals may be in the water and to take care navigating in the area.
Coomera Island has long been home to the ‘roos and during dry spells the iconic animals are known to make the 150m swim from the island to the mainland to find fresh water to drink.
Gold Coast Waterways Authority, who have installed the signs, say although the waterway already has a 6-knot speed limit, the signs are a reminder to those using the area to be careful when travelling up- and downstream.
Hal Morris, the CEO of the Gold Coast Waterways Authority, said that the safe enjoyment of waterways for everyone is important, including animals.
“Of course the issue of being safe on the water is very important and in this case that goes a bit beyond the norm, we are taking both the kangaroos and the boaties safety into account,” Mr Morris said.
