GME EPIRB recall reminder

ACCC reminds consumers to check their GME Accusat EPIRBs
In December 2013 Standard Communications Pty Ltd (GME) initiated a recall for the GME Accusat EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon), a radio beacon that when activated sends a radio signal via satellite or homing frequency to notify of a distress situation.
The recall was prompted by a microprocessor malfunction which can cause the EPIRB to fail the self-test procedure. If the defect occurs, the EPIRB may not operate in an emergency situation.
The ACCC is concerned that affected units may still be in use.
Consumers are reminded to perform a test of the unit as indicated on the unit itself (or in the instructions below) in an open area. If the unit does not perform the test function, consumers should contact GME on 02 8867 6000 or at at mtfail@gme.net.au.
The batteries in the affected beacons are due to expire by December 2014 and will cease functioning at this time.
It is recommended that all distress beacons are tested monthly to ensure operation in an emergency situation.
