GM Marine jumps onto Moomba Masters
GM's marine engine division walks the walk at the annual Moomba Masters ski and wakeboard tournamentNautique-badged boats will once again tow skiers and wakeboarders along the Yarra River while they compete in the annual Moomba Masters tournament, although this year the towboat brand will have a running partner – engine maker GM Marine.
The US-made boats tap GM Marine, part of the larger GM Powered Solutions business that supplies on- and off-road, marine and industrial engines, for the powertrains that drive its boats.
The event will see GM Marine tie in with GM Specialty Vehicles, a Melbourne-based business that imports and converts selected left-hand-drive GM models to right-hand drive for Australian customers.
GM Powered Solutions senior manager Tony Brower said the 2022 Moomba Masters International Invitational was “the perfect relationship” between GMSV’s converted vehicles – at the moment it’s just the Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck – and “large lifestyle-oriented leisure-focussed machines” that use the Silverado as a tow tug.
GMSV plans to have a fleet of Silverado pick-up trucks on display at Moomba that share much of the engine technology used in the Nautique boats that need to deliver consistent performance on the water for each competitor’s run.
“It’s fascinating to see how shared engine componentry is integrated into various business units across GM, with GM Marine and the GMSV Network being a good example of how the engine technology is being used here in Australia and New Zealand.” GMSV director Joanne Stogiannis said.
A number of Nautique ski and wake boat models use GM-sourced engines to produce the power and the well of low-down torque needed to pull slalom skiers at a consistent speed or move tonnes of wake-making ballast.
The direct-injection GM-sourced engines used in the boats, built by engine specialist PCM, include marinised versions of the 5.3-litre ZZ5 and 6.2-litre ZZ6 V8s that for Nautique’s applications need to produce more than 400Nm of torque and up to 465Nm from low in the rev range.
The 2022 Moomba Masters International Invitational runs on the Yarra River from Wednesday, March 9 to Monday, March 14.
