Stabiliser start-up Smartgyro has officially launched the first of a number of new products aimed at boat owners either building a new boat or refitting an old one.
The Italian company, which has close links to Japanese diesel engine specialist Yanmar, has launched the SG40 for boats between 50 to 60 feet in length, and the SG80 for boats from 60 to 70 feet.
Smartgyro says its products use a high-speed flywheel housed inside a sealed, airless enclosure “to minimise heat generation and reduce power consumption”.
“An exceptional stabilisation capacity is offered due to efficient, precise control electronics equipped with algorithms that optimize the operating parameters in real time,” it says.
Another point of difference from other stabilisers is that the Smartgyro units are liquid-cooled, “allowing high performance, long life of the bearings and the ability to install the stabiliser even in the hottest places such as engine rooms without compromising performance, or adding cooling auxiliaries systems”.
The units also use a pressurised closed-loop braking system with hydraulic cylinders and a proportioning valve to provide the most efficient roll reduction.
Another huge advantage for owners, Smartgyro claims, is that the compact units can be maintained onboard without it needing to be hauled out of the boat, significantly reducing downtime and cost.
The SG40 measures just 0.86 x 0.93 x 0.72 metres, while the SG80 measures 1.08 x 1.11 x 0.87 metres, making them ideal for vessels with small access spaces.
“The SG40 and SG80 are the first in a complete range of gyroscopic stabilisers that has been meticulously designed to incorporate the key benefits that are crucial to boatbuilders and boatowners,” Smartgyro sales manager Carlo Gazerro says.
“The result is an efficient, highly sophisticated product that greatly improves on-board comfort for boaters and is easy to install and maintain.
“We aim to partner with OEMs to fit our units in new build boats, giving more people the option of experiencing life on-board with a gyroscopic stabiliser.”
Smartgyro says it is preparing to launch the SG20 for boats sized from 43 to 50ft by early 2021 in line with its plans to make stabilizers for boats from 30ft to 80ft.
It will also introduce the SG10 for smaller boats “in the near future”.
