Simrad has solved the problem of having to mount dual screens on the dashboard, releasing the Simrad NSX Ultrawide screen – the same height as a normal screen, but twice the width.
The more premium Simrad NSX range of chartplotters and fishfinders made its debut last year in 7.0-, 9.0- and 12.0-inch display sizes. However, the new Ultrawide screen is available in 12.0- and 15.0-inch screen sizes, increasing the viewable area by more than 60 percent, Simrad says.
But Simrad admits that this could be more of a vanity purchase than someone wanting an extra-wide screen, saying the new units provide an “elevated dash aesthetic” as well as a new experience for boaters.

Simrad is owned by Navico Group. Navico digital systems general manager Kevin Steinbraker said the NSX Ultrawide screen would set a new standard in the marketplace.
“Whether in their cars, computer monitor at work, or the TVs in their homes, consumers have grown accustomed to and love the benefits of ultrawide screens,” Steinbraker said.
“Now they can have those same experiences at the helm with immersive graphics and flexible viewing splits.
“The NSX Ultrawide offers a new perspective on boating that consumers won’t want to go without.”
According to Simrad, the new beamy screen is built for a mix of vessels, from surf and wake boats to pontoons, cruisers, and small to mid-size centre consoles.
“Boaters can upgrade their helm to a simpler and more premium display with its revolutionary aspect ratio that provides better functionality with perfectly optimized full-page applications and application splits, as well as uninterrupted data flows that are easier to digest,” it said.
“Boaters can also create truly unique dashboards, combining multiple NSX Ultrawide displays to best fit their needs.”
In North America, the NSX Ultrawide will come bundled with C-MAP Discover X charts that are optimised for the NSX family of plotters featuring a high pixel density and therefore sharper resolution.
The new-generation C-MAP software has a built-in safety function that will automatically warn boaters if they stary too close to hazards such as objects and shallow water.
How much? The new screen will initially only be available for the North American market and priced from $US2749 ($A4170) for the 12.0-inch display and $3399 ($A5160) for the 15.0-inch version.
The Simrad NSX Ultrawide will have its official release at this week’s Boot Dusseldorf 2024.
