Gear: Simrad launches Halo 2000, 3000 radar arrays

New solid-state radar arrays from Simrad take more of the guesswork out of keeping track of what's around you

Marine electronics specialist Simrad has launched new versions of its Halo 2000 and 3000 radar systems with more definition and even higher power than before.

The updates were launched to coincide with the 2022 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The two new solid-state radar units feature higher power pulse compression – a process used to give sharper resolution with less noise – and can see further than the models they replace.

Of note, the more powerful systems are much better at spotting approaching storm cells – important for the safety of offshore boaters.

The radars also now include bird detection – important for recreational fishers keen to discover where fish are busting up on the surface as the bigger fish feed from below – target tracking and support to monitor dangerous targets such as boats on a collision course.

According to Simrad, the Halo 2000 uses 50 watts of power with a range of up to 72 nautical miles, while the Halo 3000 uses 130 watts with visibility extending to 96 nautical miles.

“That power is combined with world-class beam sharpening for enhanced target separation that is unmatched in the marketplace,” Simrad said.

The bird mode only works with the more powerful Simrad Halo 3000, searching a zone within 8.0nm of the radar array.

The Halo 2000 will be available in 3.0-, 4.0- and 6.0-foot lengths, while the more powerful Halo 3000 will come in 4.0- and 6.0-foot lengths. Of note, the radars are only rated to 80 knots of wind for safe operation – rival Raymarine’s Cyclone systems, launched last year, are rated to 100 knots.

The Simrad systems are dual-range, allowing users to monitor two different screens, and compliant with low-emissions standards, so are safe to use around marinas.

The new Halo arrays are priced from $8999 for the 3.0-foot Halo 2000 through to $10,799 for the 6.0-foot version. The Halo 3000 starts from $12,999 for the 4.0-foot version, topping out at $13,999 for the 6.0-foot one.

The Hero radar arrays are compatible with a range of Simrad chartplotters including NSS, NSX, NSO and GO.
