Australian boat owners are taking to gyro stabilisers like ducks to water, but it isn’t the big sports yacht owners seeking sure-footedness at sea – it’s the smaller boat owners.
Seakeeper, which makes a range of gyroscope-based stabilisers, said sales of its smallest unit, the Seakeeper 1, had “eclipsed all expectations” since launching in Australia early this year.
Although it didn’t disclose exact numbers, the Seakeeper 1, optimised for smaller boats reaching from 7.0 to 9.0 metres in length, had been fitted to boats from brands as diverse as Australian brands including Whittley, Cootacraft and Edencraft, and imported boats from brands including Grady-White, Cobia and Veitch.
Meanwhile, the Haines Group is fitting the Seakeeper 1 into two flagship Haines Signature 788SF centre consoles as a factory-fitted option.
Demand for the gyroscopes has grown to the extent that Seakeeper’s Australian distributor, Twin Disc Pacific, has appointed several new dealers reaching out to customers seeking either a new installation or a refit – Aqua Mobile Marine and Finesse Marine in Queensland, Davey Marine and Edencraft Marine in Victoria, and Pleisure Marine in Western Australia.

The gyroscope uses physics to counteract the pitch and roll of a boat either at rest or on the move, making life aboard a lot more comfortable particularly for those boaters prone to seasickness.
Seakeeper will be on show at November 13-15’s Sanctuary Cove Boating Festival.
