Marine electronics group Garmin has launched a new remote boat monitoring system that will allow owners to check on the status of their boat while sipping a pina colada on the beach.
The new Garmin OnDeck system pairs with a smartphone’s ActiveCaptian app that’s mainly used for navigation. With the new functionality, boat owners will be able to monitor “the boat’s battery status, bilge activity, door/hatch sensors, GPS location and more”.
“For extra peace of mind, configurable notifications can even let the user know of changes that may threaten the boat, including if it has moved into or outside of a custom geofenced area,” Garmin said.
“In addition to the GTB 10 OnDeck Hub, the system includes a door sensor, temperature sensor, shore power sensor and relay switch.”

The OnDeck system piggybacks off a mobile phone network connection, so owners will need to have a data card to be able to use it.
The system is also linked into the boat’s security system, so owners will receive an SMS alert if one of the optional security system sensors that can tell if a door or window has opened are triggered, or the boat moves.
In the event of the boat moving, owners will gain a GPS update of the boat’s location every 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the vessel’s power status. If the boat’s power is cut, OnDeck will still have enough in reserve to operate for another 48 hours.
As well, owners will have remote control over up to five switches, allowing them to prime onboard systems before they even set foot on the boat.
Garmin says the OnDeck System is compatible with the GPSMAP 84/8600, GPSMAP 74/7600, GPSMAP 10x2/12x2 and the GPSMAP 7x2/9x2/12x2 Plus series.
The Garmin OnDeck hub will be available in Australia later this year priced from $1499.
