Gear: Garmin GSD 28 fishfinder module
Garmin's latest fishfinder add-on promises much higher resolution than ever beforeGarmin has revealed the GSD 28, a new high-powered sonar system that it claims offers the highest level of detail to help serious fishers sort the bait from the sportsfish.
The new unit utilises Garmin’s RapidReturn sonar system that sends multiple signals through the water column and runs at up to six times the transmission rate of the sounder it replaces to better define targets.
Combined with Garmin’s xCHIRP sonar technology that clearly defines the fish arches, Garmin claims the GSD 28’s higher resolution will provide “excellent target separation and bottom discrimination to help anglers easily distinguish bottom features”.
It will also identify fish with “Garmin's clearest and most detailed fish arch returns”.
Garmin said GSD 28 will support dual-channel (1.0-3.0kW) CHIRP covering a broad frequency range between 25-250kHz, which it says helps create a more detailed picture of what's below, including fish on the ocean bottom and objects in the water column.
Garmin global consumer sales vice-president Dan Bartel said the GSD 28 added new and innovative features to set the standard for saltwater sportfishing
“Our RapidReturn and xCHIRP technologies combine to provide deep-sea anglers crisper, clearer and more sonar returns in deeper waters, which can be the difference between finding and missing your targets,” Bartel said.
The new Garmin GSD 28 is compatible with a number of automatically configuring Garmin and AIRMAR transducers.
It also is compatible with Garmin’s new GPSMAP 9000 series, along with the GPSMAP 8600/8600xsv, GPSMAP 7x3/9x3/12x3 and GPSMAP 10x2/12x2 series chartplotters.
The new Garmin GSD 28 module is priced at $3990.
