Daiwa has released a pair of electrically assisted overhead reels that it says are small enough to hold comfortably while fishing.
The new Daiwa Leobritz S300J and Leobritz S500JP reels offer what Daiwa says is “a powerful brushed motor which delivers instant power when engaged”.
“Britz motors are robust and offer high torque, so even with such small electric reels can deliver surprising amounts of winding power and strength,” it says.

The new aluminium-bodied reels, featuring non-slip EVA controls, will suit anglers who struggle with the demands of deep-drop jigging using a traditional hand reel, allowing them to fight fish with the assistance of an electric motor to wind on line.
The reels feature variable retrieve speeds and a line counter that tells the angler how much fishing line is in the water. The rods use up to 16kg of drag pressure.
Daiwa says both electric reels have programmable jigging functions and are able to retrieve metal jigs in a series of pre-programmed patterns with the angler’s choice of retrieval speed.
“This makes the strenuous act of high-speed jigging an attainable dream for many more anglers than ever before,” it says.

The reels are only available in right-hand retrieve. They are made to suit Daiwa’s range of overhead rods, or Daiwa’s Tanacom or Seapower rods specifically made for electric reels.
Both the 0.5kg Daiwa Leobritz S300J and 0.8kg Leobritz S500JP reels are priced at $899.
