Award-winning radar manufacturer Furuno has released an all-new compact DRS4D-NXT that is described as a Solid-State Radar with pulse compression and Doppler frequency shift sensing technology for the performance of an open array system in a compact 24in radome.
This "NXT" (short for "next") generation radar is designed for use with both NavNet TZtouch and TZtouch2 MFDs. Among its key features are:
Target Analyser: The Doppler "Target Analyser" will automatically change the color of targets approaching your boat to enhance situational awareness and clearly show hazards. For example, green echoes are stationary targets, land, or approaching targets moving at a velocity of less than three knots. Echoes dynamically turn red when targets are approaching your vessel at a speed of three knots or faster.
Bird Mode: With a single selection on the MFD, the Radar automatically adjusts settings for echo enhancement to help you locate and track birds congregating on surface baitfish.
Fast Tracking: No radar warmup time. Only a few seconds after a target has been selected your TZT will automatically display and track up to 100 targets. With accurate tracking information, estimation of other vessel's course and speed is greatly simplified.
RezBoost Beam Sharpening: For the first time, Furuno's exclusive RezBoost™ technology has been incorporated into a radar. When set to max, the sharpness is said to be equivalent to a narrow two-degree beam width. This way, you'll see more detailed targets, with less clutter and be able to identify small targets such as kayaks and dinghies with amazing detail and clean separation, Furuno says.
Operational Enhancements: Using a solid state transmitter the NXT requires minimal maintenance and requires 40 per cent less power than a similar magnetron radar, adding up to a very practical solution especially for trailerable fishing boats.
Other Capabilities: Two separate range scales can be used simultaneously (dual range), 24/36/48rpm antenna speed dependent on radar range and number of targets presented. Simple, single cable install.
The Furuno DRS4D-NXT is available now and competitively priced at $4290. More information at JN Taylor-Furuno Australia, see www.jntaylor.com.au.
