Melbourne Man Maurice Contessi will set sail next weekend (October 15, 2011) in his yacht Full Circle from Sandringham Yacht Club in a hope to raise awareness for Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
The Solo Non Stop Circumnavigation will see again another Australian sailor attempt what can only be described as the Mount Everest of the sailing world.
The attempt is being conducted under the auspices of the (UK based) World Speed Sailing Records Council (WSSRC) making Maurice one of only a few Australians to have completed the journey under the official guidelines.
When completed, Maurice will become the oldest Australian to have made the journey at 54 years of age, but more importantly, he will hopefully have raised awareness and much needed funds to continue ongoing research to find a cure for MND, a disease which claims some 1400 Australian lives each year.
The Campaign has to date been self funded by Maurice with many companies both in Australian and abroad donating and supplying much-needed specialist equipment.
Maurice Contessi:
Maurice is a yachtsman, builder, husband and father. He has campaigned three keelboats in offshore races both in Tasmania and Victoria to win ocean races in all three. Some of his notable performances include winning the 2000 Melbourne to Hobart and surviving the storm-ravaged 1998 Sydney to Hobart yacht race.
For Maurice, achieving a solo circumnavigation in his Cole 43 yacht aptly named Full Circle will see him fulfill a long-standing dream to beat his own demons and raise awareness for Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
His experience, added to the physical and mental preparation that Maurice has already undertaken will place him in a great position to complete this challenge.
