From the classifieds: Trophy 2052 Walkaround

It may have looked like a sports fisher, but the Trophy 2052 Walkaround was also a versatile weekender

Trophy Boats has a long history behind it. The brand started as the fishing sub-brand of US fibreglass boat maker Bayliner, before it eventually spun off into a standalone line of boats.

Early Trophy by Bayliner boats had their quality issues, but once Bayliner gave Trophy its own identity the boats were built to the same high quality as the parent company’s products.

Many of the shared components were also swapped out for bespoke parts that even further cut the divide between the two brands.

Trophy set a name for itself for building saltwater fishing boats featuring deep windows around the wheelhouse, large dashboards for flush-mounted electronics, versatile cockpit spaces, and decent cabin accommodations that took the harsh edge of overnighting it.

One of the more popular models brought to Australia was the Trophy 2052 Walkaround, or WA.

This boat ticks a number of offshore must-haves, including good, deep freeboard, a decent walkaround and self-draining deck, and space down the back for twin outboard engines of up to a combined 400hp, or a MerCruiser inboard engine with sterndrive.

Features included a backlit live bait tank, a transom workstation with a freshwater sink, icebox, battery isolator panel, stainless steel deck fittings including oversize cleats, and windscreen wipers on both sides of the deep split windscreen.

The good stuff didn’t just appear at deck level. Duck below, and the Trophy 2052 Walkaround featured a full-length vee berth with an infill to make it the one large space, a sink fed by a 75-litre freshwater tank, electric stove, a manual head, and full standing headroom.

You can buy these boats used and sitting on a trailer, but because it is built in the US its 2.59-metre beam means you will need to do a bit more than just back up the LandCruiser and tow it to the most convenient jumping-off point for a fishing competition.

We like this one as a stunning example of a well-optioned sterndrive model that’s had a diesel engine transplant to make it more economical to run, yet it will still cruise comfortably.

This one is set up for fishing, including outriggers for anyone who wants to use the boat to run wide chasing tuna.
