One of the big problems at the moment is that the time between pulling the trigger on buying a new boat and taking delivery of it can be a long one. The solution? Look to a good-quality used one.
That’s where a boat like this one, a well-kept and maintained 2016 Boston Whaler 420 Outrage, can be the answer to getting on the water a lot faster than waiting for the new one to arrive.
This boat is one of the pinnacles of the Boston Whaler range, and the flagship model in the Outrage line-up of US-built fast luxury centre console fibreglass fishing boats.
It’s big, at 13.0 metres in length overall and with a 3.96-metre beam, it’s also pretty broad. Part of the reason why it needs to be that beamy is what’s hanging off the transom – up to four outboard engines.
The seller has even arranged a set of four new 350hp Mercury Verado V8 engines for a repower – handy given the lead times the new owner needs to build in if they decided to do their own refit, and the fact that it looks as though the engines have each clocked up around 1000 hours of runtime.
The Boston Whaler 420 Outrage came pretty well equipped out of the factory, and this one includes a Kohler 10EKD 10kVA/60Hz genset with around 550 hours of runtime on it to run the electronics while at rest.
The Boston Whaler 420 Outrage is made for ocean running, featuring a deep 22-degree deadrise at the bow that gradually falls back to a 15-degree deadrise at the transom.
As the flagship model, there weren’t too many options for this boat, although the owner has installed a gyroscopic stabiliser that helps with keeping the boat steady while on the move or at rest – hence the need for a slightly beefier genset.
As well as all the deck-level comforts including six forward-facing seats that are perfect for fast passage-making, the Boston Whaler 420 Outrage features two berths below as well as a dinette and compact galley, making it equally good for overnight excursions.
It’s also well-kitted-out for heading offshore, with an electronics suite featuring Raymarine VHF radios, an infrared night vision camera, a multifunction navigation display, and Mercury’s SmartCraft Precision Pilot equipped with Skyhook virtual anchoring technology.
The price for this small slice of luxury? According to the ad, the boat has been immaculately maintained, attracting a list price of just shy of $890,000 without the engine upgrade.
Considering a new Boston Whaler 420 Outrage can push around $2.0 million just so you can have that new-boat smell – once it gets here – this one looks a bit of a bargain.
