For those of us whose working life is spent hunched over a keyboard in front of a computer screen, the idea of jumping on board a catamaran and living the nomadic life at sea is but a dream.
That is, if you’re buying a new boat. But there are still a large number of quality used sailing cats out there that won’t break the retirement budget.
One we’ve spotted browsing the pages of boatsales is this, a 2015 Seawind 1160 Lite. This is no ordinary catamaran.
That’s because when it was launched in 2007, the Seawind 1160 won not only an award as Australia’s best cruising cat, but also several top and most innovative design gongs in the US.
What’s most attractive about the Seawind 1160’s design is that even today, it’s a looker with flowing lines and a distinctive coach house, Targa top and innovative flip-up saloon door.
The 11.6-metre Seawind 1160 came in four different cabin configurations – this one has a three-cabin layout – but the saloon area is common across all of them.
It features a U-shaped lounge and table, broad companionways leading to the hulls and an almost seamless opening to the cockpit area. The table lines up with the lounge to become a double bed base.
Fit and finish throughout is export quality and the lounge fabric was finished with a suede leather-like appearance that is very easy to keep clean.
Every cabin and living or working space has a ventilation hatch, either deck or hull-mounted.
The ‘Lite’ version of the boat features timber laminates replacing some of the solid fibreglass as well as outboard engines rather than inboard saildrives, which removes around 1000kg of the Seawind 1160’s displacement over the standard version – important for making good speed over the water on long passages.
The other thing that Seawnds are known for is their durability. A heavy-duty mast and solid cable rigging give the 1160 a degree of toughness that holds together well in the toughest of conditions.
The boats can be sailed short-handed, featuring a self-tacking jib and lines running back to the dual-helm cockpit.
How much will this dream cost you? This boat is listed as being in top-notch condition, wearing a price tag of $580,000 to step aboard and start living your dream.
That’s compete with a tender, relatively new sails, biminis, fridge, galley, bedding, batteries and solar – in fact, everything you need to get away from it all.
