From the classifieds: 2008 Malibu Corvette Limited Edition Sport-V

Yep, Malibu once made a boat that looked a lot like a floating sports car

In the late 1970s, someone at US ski and wake sports brand Malibu stitched up a deal with the global car brand Chevrolet. The idea was to take all the good bits of a Chevrolet Corvette two-door performance coupe and shape them into a boat.

The result was the Maibu Corvette, a limited-edition model that was originally based on the C4 Corvette – the quite wedge-looking one – and powered by a marinised version of the LT1 small block V8 that powered the road-going car.

Buyers snapped them up, with momentum carrying over into the C5 generation Chevrolet Corvette.

That was enough for Malibu to have another crack at the formula in 2008 with the launch of a boat based on the new C6 Corvette – a coupe that still had the same wedge shape as the C4, but with softened edges that took away the blockiness of the previous designs.

That boat was the Malibu Corvette Limited Edition Coupe.

The boat borrowed a lot from the road car, using the same 400hp LS1 V8 engine as the wheeled version, the same seats, steering wheel and even the dash.

But an even better version was based on the more powerful Chevrolet Corvette Z06 – the Malibu Corvette Limited Edition Sport-V.

This stepped up to a 500hp 7.0-litre LS7 V8. Loud, fast and boasting plenty of Chevrolet styling cues including the frenched twin tail-lights in the transom and quad exhausts, only 50 were made worldwide.

At the time, it was regarded as one of the world’s fastest inboard production ski boats, capable of a straight-line speed of 65mph.

All this is why when one comes up for sale, you’re going to sit up and take notice.

This particular boat, number 19 of the 25 Malibu Corvette Limited Edition Sport-Vs made, is currently for sale in Victoria.

It even sits on the custom Corvette trailer that features rims that belonged to the road-going car.

The boat was pretty well equipped, featuring an eight-speaker Rockford Fosgate audio system, keyless ignition, a fly-by-wire throttle system, heated seats, car-like electric side windows, heaps of Corvette logos including Z06 ones, and even a red-lit see-through engine hatch.

On board, there’s enough space for you and seven of your friends.

When you think about it, this boat is much cheaper than its road-going equivalent, and more unique to boot.
