The boating world seems obsessed with extreme performance and the ability to go from port to destination in as little time as possible. But what is there for those of us who think the journey is the destination?
That’s where elegant motor yachts such as the Grand Banks 49 Eastbay HX shine.
Eastbay is a motor yacht maker with its head office currently in Australia but with its manufacturing based in Malaysia. One of the brand’s most popular models was the Grand Banks 49 Eastbay HX, a boat that when it launched at the 1997 Miami International Boat Show racked up 31 orders.
The boat was built around a classic design featuring a long, narrow hull with a moderately flared bow and a Raymond Hunt-designed deep-vee hull carried forward. Above the deck, a low coachhouse runs back to a raised semi-enclosed helm deck. Behind this is a shallow but wide cockpit ahead of a curved stern.

Access around the boat was well thought out, with broad sidedecks and decent handrails running forward to a wide, open foredeck that can serve as an entertainment space, or as a perfect location for a sunbed.
The helm deck, which on this boat listed on boatsales includes a set of clears to fully enclose it, includes a comfortable L-shaped lounge with a fold-out table.
Forward of this is a forward-facing two-seat lounge made for passagemaking, and to port is the helm station.
The extensive use of timber throughout this boat is most apparent in this area.
Below decks, the Grand Banks 49 Eastbay HX features two staterooms made up of a master suite with an island double bed forward and a pair of single beds aft.
In between are the bathroom with a wet head, and a large space immediately below the stairs featuring a dinette to one side and a comprehensive galley to the other.

This boat includes an aft swim deck that can carry a tender so you can anchor up somewhere and head ashore.
The Grand Banks 49 Eastbay HX was powered using a pair of 660hp CAT diesel engines with enough punch to push the heavy hull along at speeds of up to 28 knots when asked.
The fuel tanks carry around 2900 litres all up, giving an impressive range at a comfortable cruising speed of around 12-18 knots.
The most impressive thing, though, is that all this boat could be yours for less than the cost of a Brighton beach box.
