Aussies are known for their resourcefulness and The Freeze Dried Bait Company -- from the eighth Australian state or territory aka New Zealand -- has come up with a cracker.
Using squid said to be sourced by premium sustainability-focused suppliers, and commercial freeze driers, the Kiwi company removes 98 per cent of moisture from the seafood to create a compact and convenient offering full of natural fish-attracting oils.
Packed in heavy-duty UV-proof bags, and with nitrogen flushing, the bait remains perfectly preserved for more than three-years, says the bait company. This makes it ideal for packing on your boat and leaves no excuse for would-be anglers and cruising sailors not to wet a line.
When it’s time to fish, simply rehydrated the bait in fresh or salt water. This will happen in around six minutes (or as long as it takes to rig a rod) in the zip-lock packaging pouch, resulting in a bait with a desirable and slightly rubbery texture.
The firmness of the rehydrated bait could be a bonus, as it helps ensures it grips the hook better than most fresh alternatives. This results is more casts from a single bait and, we presume, there's also better resilience to pickers that a soft offering.
Here are some other touted benefits to freeze-dried bait:
<< No need to keep bait refrigerated or frozen; eskies and freezers are free for essentials
<< Lasts infinitely longer than fresh bait, three-plus years!
<< Store anywhere, throw a bag in the glovebox, briefcase or back pack. And leave on your boat
<< Light weight, approximately 70 per cent lighter than fresh bait, let alone a frozen block
<< Cleaner alternative, reduced mess and smell
Judging from the local field tests to date, the freeze-dried squid has been snapped up by a wide variety of prized Aussie fish species. The Kiwi company also produces freeze-dried prawns and a mackerel/squid chunk mix.
