It's Discover Sailing Day this Sunday (October 23, 2016) and the 20th anniversary of this great community and industry will see the doors thrown open, the dinghy fleets launched and a flotilla of yachts set sail at clubs around the country.
The only thing you need to bring to Discover Sailing Day is your time, some sun-smart gear and sunscreen, and a smile. An initiative of the sailing and boating industries, Discover Sailing Day is a fantastic way to have a great day out with your partner, friends, work colleagues or family.
Of course, Discover Sailing Day and the sport itself will keep the kids entertained. Participating clubs look forward to showing families the fun, safety, accessibility and affordability of sailing.
"Since this special day started we have had around 2000 kids try sailing each year. It has been a great way to introduce young people to the lifestyle and no doubt the day has given kids the basics to start an Olympic dream," said Howard Glenn, National CEO of the Boating Industry Association.
When you register for Discover Sailing Day you have the option to go out for a short sail with an experienced sailor, have a look around the club facilities, and find out about their programs and sailing courses. Even kids as young as five can sail when accompanied by a parent or guardian. People of all abilities are welcome and some clubs offer accessible facilities for people with a disability.
The schedule of activities will vary from club to club, but it’s recommended you allow about two hours if you want to get out on the water. Contact the Discover Sailing Host at your local club to find out more details about the Discover Sailing Days they offer.
Discover Sailing Day forms part of National Discover Boating Week. For more information about how you can get into boating all year round see discoversailing.org.au.
