A recreational fishing licence will not be required across the state of Victoria on Sunday, October 16, to help celebrate the inaugural national Gone Fishing Day and encourage new anglers to join the State Government’s terrific Target One Million plan.
Fisheries Victoria hopes the licence-free day will help newcomers try fishing for the first time and encourage those who have not wet a line for years to revisit the great Aussie pastime. It is estimated that there are between four and five million Aussie anglers.
The state fishing body said it wants to get more people fishing, more often, in line with the State Government’s Target One Million plan, which aims to increase participation to one million anglers by 2020.
Existing fishers are encouraged to take a friend, family member or neighbour fishing, whether that be from a boat, a pier or along a riverbank.
Escaping day-to-day tasks, getting in touch with nature, and spending time with the people that matter are all reasons to get outdoors and enjoy a day on the water.
Fisheries Victoria will host a 'come and try' fishing event at Mordialloc Pier and angling clubs are holding local events too.
