Four-stroke outboard trend grows

Big percentage increase in four-stroke sales says OEDA

Latest data from OEDA members (Outboard Engine Distributors Association), shows dealer retail sales of all outboard engines for the three-month period from November 2013 to January 2014, remained flat in Australia compared with the previous corresponding three-month period. Four stroke retail sales however, grew by a robust 45 per cent over this same period, showing Australian consumers are adopting four-stroke technology and lower-emission products more than ever before.

Commenting on the findings, OEDA Executive Officer, Lindsay Grenfell said: "We have seen the momentum in four-stroke models gathering for some time, particularly now in 30hp and above models. Consumers are seeking more fuel efficient, lower emission power for their boats. Our member outboard manufacturers, Mercury, Tohatsu and Yamaha, who represent in excess of 70 per cent of all outboard engines sold in Australia and the south Pacific, are continually developing and launching new technology four stroke products to meet this growing shift in consumer demand.

OEDA’s initiative to label all outboards with a VELS star rating has also made it easier for potential buyers to identify low emission outboard products when researching to repower an existing boat or purchase a new boat."

OEDA introduced the Voluntary Emissions Labelling Scheme (VELS), an emissions rating system, in January 2007 to help boat owners choose outboard engines based on emission information along with other features required to meet their usage requirements. The voluntary code, VELS is based on international emission regulations and is supported by the major outboard distributors in Australia; Mercury, Tohatsu and Yamaha. VELS is the only established scheme recognised and approved by the Australian Government. OEDA maintains a database of all member products on its website www.oeda.com.au.
