A former turn-of-the-century boatshed on Sydney’s Georges River complete with its own slipway has sold for $3.4 million.
The former Nicholsons Boatshed on Algernon Street, Oatley, held by the Oatley family for three generations, has been converted to a waterfront home.
However, it’s definitely the worst house in the best street. Before its new owners – the home’s next-door neighbours – move in, it will need a complete makeover.
According to Highland Property, the agents for the sale, the site was expected to fetch between $2.75 million and 3.0 million.
The agents say the site was originally a refuelling station for boats using the Georges River, as well as a workshop for boat repairs.

However, over time access to the site’s two-storey boatshed complete with its own slipway and jetty has been cut off, and will need to be restored.
The house itself is a three-bedroom brick home with some water views, depending on where you stand, and a two-car garage that includes an inspection pit for getting underneath a vehicle.

The narrow site is also on slightly more than 1600 square metres, running all the way from the street front to the water.
The first mention of the boatshed is in newspaper articles dating back to the 1920s, not long after the boatshed was established. It was originally opened as a boatbuilding business by Fletcher and Son, before becoming Carson’s Boatshed and then Nicholsons Boatshed. According to the Oatley Heritage and Historical Society, it became a private residence in 2016.
