Territory spice
Got an upwardly mobile family? Like the Ford Territory SUV concept? Have a flash skiboat or bowrider to haul around, and possess an accommodating wallet to pay for the extra fuel? Then pencil in the hyped-up F6X Sports SUV from Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) for a look.
FPV claim to have set a new benchmark in performance motoring with the launch of the sports F6X as the most powerful six-cylinder SUV in the local market. It goes on sale from February 28.
The F6X has at its heart the F6 270 Turbo 4.0lt DOHC in-line six-cylinder engine that produces 270kW of power and 550Nm of torque, which FPV said, is unmatched by any local or imported luxury six-cylinder SUV equivalent.
The powerplant is matched to a ZF six-speed automatic transmission and full-time All-Wheel-Drive system, and is reported to propel the vehicle from 0 to 100kmh in a slick 5.9 seconds.
Based on Ford’s top of the range Territory, the AWD Ghia Turbo, the F6X produces 25kW more power and 70Nm extra torque over that model. The F6X also has a recommended retail price tag of $75,990, $10,590 more than the Ghia Turbo, but reported to be considerably cheaper than its European equivalents.
The Ghia Turbo has a claimed fuel consumption of 14.2lt/100km with the more powerful F6X using 14.9lt/100km of premium unleaded. Hefty figures, considering the other Territory models use between 12.2 and 12.5lt/100km, but, hey, that’s what you get with performance.
Apart from the extra oomph, the extras above the Ghia include FPV interior and exterior styling, tweaked suspension, upgraded brakes, and a F6X-specific Dynamic Stability Control (DSC).
FPV said its engineers re-tuned the ride and handling to produce a firmer sports feel, enhancing the primary ride of the control of the vehicle.
Completing the re-tuned suspension is an upgraded brake package with front Brembo six-piston callipers and 355 by 32mm ventilated rotors, and rear 328 by 26mm ventilated rotors with single-piston callipers. The Alpine Silver finish on the 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels is also exclusive to the F6X.
The F6X also has a number of advanced active and passive safety features, including four-channel ABS with traction control and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution.
Standard equipment, said FPV, include side curtain airbags and dual-stage driver and front passenger airbags, a Reverse Sensing System and reverse camera.
The interior features leather seats in two-tone trim with F6X logo embroidered on the head rests, and the two-tone treatment also on the third row of the seven-seat variant.
The instrument cluster has the FPV logo, an engine speed red line and FPV blue illumination. There are FPV scuff plates and alloy pedals, and a build plate on the gear selector surround. There is also Ford’s Interior Command Centre system working the 6-disc CD, automatic climate control, and large colour screen.
The exterior has Molten Metal accents on the front mesh grille, front skid plate, bonnet air scope, door mirror scalps and rear skid plate.
