I have recently fallen back in love with the art of fly fishing. The last time fly fishing boomed in Australia was when the magnificent series "A River Somewhere" graced our screens in the 90's, reminding us all of the beautiful romance of this great facet of angling.
The funny thing about ‘flyshing’ is that it is not as hard as it looks, it doesn’t have to cost you a fortune, and at times it can be the most successful fishing option available.
The simple reality of fly fishing is that the line is weighed and used as the tool to deliver a very light fly into the zone where you expect to find a fish. That is about as technical as you have to get with the art.
I highly recommend buying the best outfit you can afford and try and do at least one day with a professional guide early in your career to iron out bad habits before they become lifelong problems.
But the single most important thing about fly fishing is to simply have a go. I am average at best, but never shy away from trying to improve. This has helped me to catch species including mako and blue sharks, sailfish, kingfish, Queenfish, saratoga, barramundi and, of course, brown and rainbow trout (pictured) on the fly.
Catching fish this way is very rewarding and even delivering the perfect cast makes you feel good inside. So pick up a fly outfit if you ever get the chance and wave the wand with conviction. I bet if you do, you too will fall in love with this magical fishing technique.
