They say that 10 per cent of anglers catch 90 per cent of the fish. The reason for this: the top anglers do the 10 ‘percenters,’ that is, those little things that make such a big difference.
Terminal tackle is such an important part of the entire fishing package and its importance is often overlooked. Hooks should be new and sharp, leaders fresh and strong.
But what about the boring old swivel?
When you have finished reading this, I would like you to do me -- and you -- a big favour. Go out and find your tackle box and throw out every brass swivel you own. They are bad news as they don’t actually swivel. They should just be called line joiners!
The best swivels to go for are black rolling and crane types (pictured). They are generally less than half the size of a brass swivel with the same strength rating. This means less drag through the water, better casts and a whole host of other benefits.
Next time you are in your favourite tackle store, grab a packet of brass swivels and a packet of crane or back rolling swivels and do the comparison for yourself. It really is amazing. And if you are wondering what all the fuss is about, just read the first line I wrote in this column!
