This October Long Weekend 2016 marks the opening of a new trout season in NSW after the third wettest winter on record.
Extensive if not excessive rain coupled with an intensive stocking program should see anglers enjoy a great start to the 2016-17 trout season, which opens this Saturday, October 1. This date marks the end of the annual closure which protects wild trout during their spawning period.
This year’s spawn run was boosted by good seasonal rains which have resulted in creeks and rivers flowing well and many dams at their full storage capacity.
Wild trout numbers have been enhanced by the recent stocking of more than 1 million rainbow and brown trout by DPI and the Central and New England Acclimatisation Societies.
Stocking of Monaro and Southern Highlands waters will continue over coming months, with a total of about 2.9 million trout and salmon to be stocked in NSW this season.
The open season for recreational fishing in trout streams closes on Monday, 12 June 2017, but trout dams remain open to fishing all year.
