NSW Fisheries recently posted an update on its fishing-licence funded Fish Aggregation Device or FAD program. And the news is good. The mahi mahi or dolphin fish have arrived.
The East Australian Current has been slow to push south this year, but good things come to those who wait and anglers have reported solid catches of dolphinfish (mahi mahi) on the DPI Tweed Heads and Coffs Harbour Fish FADs.
The water has been a warm 24C and it's nice and blue, moving over the shelf on the north and mid-north NSW coast,s which is just what you want for game fishing.
Expect other FADs along the NSW coast to start loading up with mahi mahi as the warm water pushes further south.
Often marlin shadow these fish and hang around the FADs, too.
If you can get out to the FADs at dawn and pitch a live bait in there you stand the best chance of taking a big dolphin fish. As weekend traffic increases, the smaller fish seem to be more common until such time as they spook from too much traffic.
