Fishing Tip: Choosing the right hardware

Fishing advice provided by IFISH TV
There is more to barramundi fishing than just tying on a lure and casting it out with the hope of a successful outcome.
Firstly, there is a braid to mono connection knot that will bring many unstuck. I like the 'Melville Island special' as taught to me by legendry guide Warren "Wazza" Smith.
Then there is the leader question -- too light and you get rubbed off, too heavy and the lure won’t get as many bites. Generally I find 50-60 pound (about 24-28kg) to be a good happy medium.
But what about that all important lure choice?  I am a big fan of natural colours like the Yo-Zuri Crystal minnow (pictured), but I use gold, pink and fluoro green at times and they catch their fair share.
Other points to consider with lure choice are size, floating/suspending/sinking, shallow/ deep/surface. So many options, so little time!
Two words that will help with all these decisions: trial and error!
Just keep trying different options until you get it right and then trial some more. Never fall into the trap of using a lure just because it worked in the past. Choose a lure that is spot on for the conditions you are fishing and if it doesn’t produce, move onto to next one that might.
Most lures need both a hook and split ring upgrade, too. Heavy duty rings and 4-6 X extra strong hooks will do the job in 90 percent of cases.
It may be a lot to process, but if you like the idea of catching an Aussie icon, you will have to make every effort to ensure you don’t have a chink in your armour.
Yours in fishing,
Paul Worsteling
